Learning and studying a foreign language is a key part of our curriculum. It provides pupils with the opportunity to learn about different cultures and appreciate and celebrate differences. Our focus language is Spanish, which is taught in Key Stage 2 and delivered by our class teachers. We use the Language Angels scheme of work and resources to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious Spanish curriculum that inspires and excites our pupils with a wide variety of topics and themes. Our ultimate aim is that pupils will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond Key Stage 2 as we want all children to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating.

Alongside learning the Spanish language through their Spanish lessons, pupils also learn about the country of Spain, and various aspects of Spanish culture and traditions. 

Our curriculum builds from Early Language units, to Intermediate units and into Progressive units, we introduce children to Spanish through songs and games and plenty of opportunities to orally rehearse words and phrases. As our progressive curriculum builds, pupils develop their Spanish conversational skills and their writing skills, covering the four key language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Our Spanish curriculum has a strong focus on vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar, which is mapped out across the units we teach.

Our pupils build on previous knowledge gradually as their Spanish lessons continue to recycle, revise and consolidate previously learnt language whilst building on all four language skills. An awareness of required and appropriate grammar concepts is taught discreetly throughout all units.

• Each unit and lesson have clearly defined objectives and aims.
• Each lesson incorporates ample speaking and listening tasks to enable pupils to orally rehearse and improve.
• Reading and writing activities are included in all units.
• Each unit includes a grammar concept which increases in complexity
• Extending writing activities are used to ensure that pupils recall previously learnt language and, by reusing it, are able to recall it and use it with greater ease and accuracy.
